As Good As It Getz.

Will Gina, my Hyundai Getz, be joined by a Chery QQ?

chery_qq_philippines.jpgMy Philippine Hyundai Getz, Gina, may be joined by a new member of the family, if all bodes well.

My mother’s up for a new car, but she’s significantly hampered by budget. I’m trying to convince her to go for the Chery QQ, which is within her budget range and perfect for the budget-conscious woman who travels by herself. The Chery QQ is compact, fuel-efficient, and kinda cute in a girly way. Nothing like my Hyundai Getz, Gina, but it’s either that or the Suzuki Alto, and there’s a Php30,000 difference between the Alto’s MT and the QQ’s AT… in favor of the Chery.

Of course, if my mother buys that car, you can bet I’ll set up a blog for her as well. Lord knows there is NO Chery Philippines information online right now. No website, no price lists, nothing. So there’s a golden PR opportunity right there to bring tons of Chery information to a demanding public. Will we see a “Chery QQ Philippines: Life with QuyQuy” (pronounced ‘kooy kooy’) blog on GannsDeen.com in the not-so-distant future? Maybe. Meanwhile, folks at Chery Philippines, why not give this Philippines Hyundai Getz lover a call and let’s talk, because my mom is thisclose to buying a car from you.

Just surfing the net for a review on Chery QQ3 cars but couldnt find any and i stumble down your blog and it was kinda interesting reading about the performance and your own personal experience in owning Gina the Hyundai Getz. It kinda interesting to start something about the other car QQ since my sister is bragging in getting one and am from US which before buying something, we depend on what the review has to say and do count in our decision making. Again, I do appreciate what you are doing.

Hi Bongie! Thanks for swinging by my Getz website.

My mother and I visited the Chery dealership in Fort Bonifacio - beside the Hyundai Getz dealership along 32nd Avenue (or is it 5th?) - to see the car, and she was pleased with what she saw.

However, I managed to speak to a Chery QQ owner when I was getting my car’s hubcap fixed, and I asked him kind of fuel efficiency he was getting.

He said he was getting 8km/L, and I was shocked.

    EIGHT?! That’s ridiculous!

So I’m not exactly sure who to believe right now, but I can tell you that was one angry Chery QQ owner.

Hello; me again. Still cranky after some idiot who argued with me over a parking space at SM MOA gouged out a long line on the door of my pristine Getz with what looked like a car key. Not enough damage for insurance to cover and not worth the three days needed to retouch. Will just do a rubdown and touch up myself as did not go through to the metal.

Anyway, about the Chery QQ which Chevy/Daewoo claims is a copy of the Spark/Matiz, hard to believe that it only gets 8 kpl. You really have to thrash the engine to get that kind of bad mileage so best to get another view or do a test drive yourself. The Motioncars website car chart only has manufacturer’s claimed mileage posted so that is not reliable. Compared to the Spark, the QQ has more features (all power, airbags, etc.), and is way much cheaper. So big question aside from actual fuel economy is build quality and durability. With fuel prices the way they are and still rising, a Chery QQ would be a better - and much safer - alternative to a motorcycle. Incidentally, the Chery QQ lists an auto-manual option. Sounds like an automatic clutch which you still shift but not a full automatic.

Let’s do a thread on the Chery QQ and maybe we can talk to the dealer for in-depth answers.

OUCH. Vic, I’m sorry to hear that. Hay, road rage extends to the parking lot. And yes, anything is better than a Spark! LOL

My mother and I visited the Chery Fort Bonifacio dealership and learned of the following:

    > The QQ3 doesn’t have airbags, although it is all power. It has two speakers upfront, and only a cassette tape player (What, no CD player? I KNOW!). Its boot is spacious for its size, and you’ll be comfortable at the back if you’re anywhere below 5″8.

    > You’re right about the automatic clutch, but it does have a full automatic option.

    > For my Mum, I think it’s a good car. It’s small, easy to maneuver and drive, and obviously cheap. (AT is PHP373K; MT is PHP319K.)

I agree that safety and durability are important, but let’s call a spade a spade and acknowledge that one can’t expect a Volvo for anywhere below PHP400K. Since Manila traffic is terrible during rush hour and those are the hours my Mom’s on the road, the chances of a high-impact crash aren’t that high, and with the supposed fuel economy of the QQ3, it isn’t such a bad choice.

It’s your mother’s choice which car she’s going to buy. But I don’t suggest buying her the Chery QQ. It’s not safe and drives poorly.
Getz has 4 stars at EuroNCAP crash tests, while can not achieve even 2 stars!
If she’s buying a vehicle, she could check a year or two old Getz instead of QQ.

    Thanks for the comment, Himi.

Unfortunately, my mother’s office’s car plan doesn’t provide for used cars, and the Hyundai Getz is priced out of her range. :(

Studied the QQ before as or company was interested w/ it and when my boss gave me the price list and brochure (and after seeing it had airbags), I then ran off to Chery dealer in Makati.

True, the QQ didn’t have airbags (and when C! presented them the award for best mini car the host stated it had airbags). The fender lamps on two units I saw at the dealer were cracked. The paint on the sill/running board, inside door frame, engine bay and areas not easily seen was substandard. It had china made tires (have you seen reports about how bad they perform and unsafe?).

I was shock to see the Coca-Cola even purchased this over the prev. issued Getz. I’ll see what happens after they put in more mileage into them.

It is true that there is not much local/internet info. I too stumbled at your blog since I was doing follow up research.

Pls. do let us know how it performs.

For now, I’d get the Picanto over the QQ.

  8. admin June 10th, 2008 2:41 pm

    Hi Ryan!

Have you seen the new Picanto? The headlights look like the next generation Chery! Can’t find a photo, but I swear I’ve seen it. Methinks a bit of industry insider information is spreading around. LOL The Chery is substandard, frankly, but for its price, what can you expect, yeah?

We haven’t gotten the QQ yet, but visit my blog sporadically for updates. And oh, please, between the Picanto, the Chery, and the Getz, there’s no contest: chunk the Chery and push away the Picanto. You gotz to getz the Getz. *grin*

    Hello Ganns,

Yup, go for the Getz and I think that I am due for an upgrade from my 1.1 manual to a 1.4 automatic (I am developing a lazy clutch foot as I near the top end of middle age, but I am a changed man in a sports car like a Mazda Miata)which should give me the same or better mileage. Stop me if I am wrong. The diesel variant is out as the price is almost up there with the Hyundai Accent base edition which has a better power to weight configuration.

    All the best.

I’m planning to buy a car next year, yeah I know its a bit too far and I still have 365 days to go but I think that 365 days is worth reviewing for chery qq. My choices are QQ,ALTO,SPARK,GETZ,PICANTO top choice is the QQ since its cheap and within budget range, also its a bit cute and mature than the ALTO.
Picanto,Getz and Spark is a bit expensive and I have to get financing for that, but if its only the way the its only the way.

I have an old Mazda 323 and still in good shape, it has an average engine condition which I know its old and it will break in time. It has an old under chassis
component which I know it will break in time. My dilemma goes here, is it worth buying chery qq over a complete repair of my mazda 323? Buying aftermarket parts for my old car would last 6 months to 3 years depending on the mileage while buying brand new car would last 2 to 5 years depending on the mileage and ruggedness.

If your mother is going to buy QQ please keep us posted. If I have my qq this year or next year I will also let you guys know my experience.

Will wait for that, rjbinghay. Thanks! :D
